Twelve-week-old Astro, named after the dog in The Jetsons, is a charcoal lab. His unusual shiny gray color caught my eye as I walked the park, and Astro was only too happy to pose for me. Charcoal labs are the result of two recessive genes. When a Labrador that carries the dilution gene (dd) is bred with another Labrador who also carries the dilution gene, dilute color puppies can be born—either charcoal like Astro or silver or champagne. Who knew?! Anyway, Astro was absolutely adorable, even when he was trying to eat my camera. He also still had that puppy smell!
